Chapter Eight

I jerk awake when my bed dips. I have no idea what time it is or when I fell asleep. My eyes feel puffy, and I can barely peel them apart to see who’s in my bed. I’m only slightly surprised to see the twins crawling in on either side of me. I say nothing as Vito settles against my back, his arm thrown over my waist as Luca lies facing me.

“Hi,” I croak, clearing my throat before continuing. “What are the two of you doing here?”

Luca’s face fills with sympathy as he reaches up to stroke his hand down my cheek. “James called and told us what happened, so we hurried home to check on you.”

“How are you doing, baby girl?” Vito asks as he nuzzles my neck.

I squeeze my eyes shut, my chest tight as I fight against the tears wanting to spill forth again. “How do you think I’m doing?”

Vito growls, leaning up on his elbow so he can look down at me. “Want us to go kick his ass?”

I’m shaking my head before he even finishes asking. “No. Absolutely not.”

“We totally will if you want us to,” Luca says, sighing when I shake my head again. “That’s unfortunate. I was looking forward to kicking his ass.”

“The two of you are his friends, and he’s going to need you right now. You can’t be mad at him.” I pause. “What exactly did he tell you?”

“We absolutely can be mad at him.” Vito’s voice is doing the growling thing again. “He cheated on you. He hurt you. He might be our friend, but so are you.”

Luca squeezes my hand. “He said he proposed—like an idiot—because he felt guilty for cheating on you. Apparently, he’s bisexual and just told you. You said you needed a break—for the summer and the next school year.”

I nod. “That about covers it. I know the two of you are protective of me, but you can’t turn your back on James. I think the three of us are the first people he’s told outside of maybe some people at his school. I can’t be there for him right now—I’m too hurt—which is why I need the two of you to be there for him.

“Don’t even try to argue with me,” I say when I hear Vito taking a breath behind me. I roll onto my back so I can see both of them. “What he did doesn’t mean I don’t still love him. He’s been my best friend for years longer than he was my boyfriend. He’s going to be confused and hurting right now. He’s going to need you, since I can’t be there for him. But you can’t give him shit about being bisexual.”

Vito scoffs. “Like we give a shit about his sexual preferences. What we care about is that he hurt you.”

Luca sighs. “Of course, you have to bring that up—making sure I feel guilty enough to not be angry. I would never turn my back on someone because of their sexual orientation—especially not when it’s the same as mine.
